For the first time, a Deepavali Squash Competition was organised by the Indian members of the The New Club squash section, led by Dr Prem Kumar. The competition was held from 2 – 4 November 2015. This event attracted a record crowd of participants. A total of 36 men and women competed in the event. They were divided into two teams named after the great Indian epics, Ramayana and Mahabharat . Team Ramayana was led by Mr. Don Dharma, while the captain for Team Mahabharat was Mr. Varpal S. Sagoo. From the opening game right till the final game, every match provided the spectators with nail-biting excitement. It was left to the final few games to decide which team would win this epic battle on the courts. Then, euphoria for Team Ramayana and heartbreak for Team Mahabharat, as Don Dharma’s team lifted the Dr Amalourdes trophy .
After all the sweat and tears on the courts, the event culminated with a Squash Deepavali Night at the karaoke room. It was a fellowship gathering with a special theme. This time the theme was Indian Culture. We saw members coming in the most colourful Indian attires to light up the place. The was also a Saree Queen competition for the non-Indian ladies. Penny Loke was crowned Squash Saree Queen for 2015, with Jenny Pang and Karen Goh as first and second runner-up respectively. The night was filled with lively Tamil and Hindi songs while our members enjoyed the sumptuous Indian food and drinks. Of course, the night will not be complete without Bhangra dance by everyone, and for everyone. It was indeed a night to be remembered. The squash section takes this opportunity to congratulate and thank the organising committee of this event for a job well done.
