GOH CHEE AIK M’SHIP No : G46 DATE JOINED : 26th May 1982 No. of YEARS : 41 HIGHLIGHTS : Committee Member 2010 – Present : Tombola Section Chairman : Digital Media & Library Section Chairman : Food & Beverage Section Chairman : Former Darts Section Chairman Mr. Goh Chee Aik has been a member of the club since he first arrived in Taiping in the year 1982. Everyone will know who he is as the Club is as much a second home to him as his actual home. Sometimes, we have to give credit to his wife for allowing him to be the much needed eyes in the club with his presence everyday without fail. Mr. Goh was elected into the General Committee in the year 2010 and has continued to be for the past 13 years, holding the positions of Tombola Section Chairman, Digital Media & Library Section Chairman as well as the Food and Beverage Chairman. He surely is a Lady’s man in making sure they get their Tombola games running without a hitch and many I guess have become rich through the generous returns when playing the game. This wizard has not lost his touch on children too where he has organized plenty of fun activities for them in the Club. He made a point to improve our children’s intelligence by organising Reading Day, Colouring Contest and even gave them the opportunity to have fun by bringing Traditional Kampung Games into the Club. I am sure most if not all of us have received news constantly through the Digital Media as well as read the books which Mr Goh has constantly added to the Club Library. Also, it is through Mr. Goh’s hard work and constant presence that we are able to keep an eye on our F&B Section as well. With Mr. Goh’s daily visits to the club, we now enjoy great food and drinks. Throughout his tenure, he has also organised many activities under the F&B section such as our favourite ‘OctobeerFest’, the occasional ‘World Cup fun games’ and many more. A shy man who prefers to keep out of the limelight, Mr. Goh Chee Aik has always kept an eye on the F&B Section which he hold dear to his heart as well as the regular beer mug or whisky glass in his hands. So rightly, tonight we celebrate and honour the man, Mr. Goh Chee Aik for his unwavering support and hard work put in to the Club and we proudly present this Citation award to him and thank him for his service and sacrifice to the club

NAME : DR. S. GUNASEELAN, AMP M’SHIP No : G57 DATE JOINED : 26TH SEPTEMBER 1991 No. of YEARS : 30years Dr. Gunaseelan joined the Club when he was a District Dental Officer in Parit Buntar before retiring as Timbalan Pengarah Kesihatan Negeri Trengganu (Pergigian) in 2005. He holds the helm as Swimming Section Chairman for the past 10 years. His valuable contributions, spanning approximately two decades of wonderful work to the club, specifically to the Swimming Sub-Committee is highly appreciated. His ‘can-do’ attitude has made a positive difference to the swimming arena. He have made swimming a competitive sport at club and inter-club level and at the same time motive lifesaving activities. His unfaltering energy and determination has stirred the swimming sub-committee and other sections of the club to greater heights and achievements.

NAME : DR. MICHAEL WONG HEAN KWAI, PMP, AMP, PJM M’SHIP No : W1 DATE JOINED : 19th January 1979 No. of YEARS : 42years Past President: 1984 – 1985 Past President: 1989 – 1991 Doctor Michael Wong has been a practising doctor starting his service in the Armed Forces of Malaysia and retired with the rank of Captain. During his time as a member of the Club, Doctor Michael Wong also served as a President of The New Club for the years of 1984 and 1985 holding the tenure for 2 years and returning again as President from 1989 till 1991. Doctor Michael returned as the Vice President of The New Club in 2009 and since then has held various chairmanship in Sub-Committees of Indoor Games, Line Dance as Darts. He also was instrumental in starting the Billards and Snooker Section for the benefit of our members. Doctor Michael has been returned unopposed as Vice President again for the new tenure of 2021 – 2023. We believe he will be of further service to the Club in future.

On 27th December, we managed to catch up with the ‘last’ recipient of our Citation Award, Mr. Brian Morrison, who was absent during our 127th AGM held on 17th December 2021. . Nevertheless, the President was persistent to personally present the award himself to this huge but kind hearted English gentleman. . Thanks to his ever generous wife, Nyana (who is also a Citation Award winner), she too had made an effort to serve us a lovely ‘English theme’ Hi-Tea at their cozy camelot. . Brian who hails from Wallsend, UK, became our Club member in the year 2001, after completing his contract in a Power Station in Saudi Arabia. He was a former Marine Engineer and spent 25 years at sea. He had since retired and resided in Taiping with his wife. . Mr. Morrison spent no less time involving himself in our Club’s swimming activities and holds the position of Vice Chairman in the Section’s Sub-Committee team for almost 20 years. . His contributions and advise in setting up value-added Jacuzzi facility at the pool area, the installation of starter’s blocks for our young swimmers to improve their swimming skills when competing at higher levels and making priorities that the Club continued to organized Swimming Gala each year. . Other than being active in swimming activities, Mr. Morrison was also a regular face attending and supporting almost all Club functions and events held over the years. Nevertheless, he was the most sought after ‘Mr. Santa Claus’ by the children each year during the Christmas Children parties for the past 10 years. . This Citation couldn’t have come on a much better time for Brian as a Christmas gift from the Club. Here’s wishing this lovely couple a Jolly Great Christmas and many more Wonderful New Years ahead of them!!!!

NAME : MR. K. RAMA KRISHNAN, AMP M’SHIP No : R50 DATE JOINED : 18TH MARCH 1980 No. of YEARS : 41years Former Hon. Treasurer: 2001 – 2003 Hon. Treasurer: 2011 – Present (6th Term) Mr K. Rama Krishnan, AMP has been a member of the club since 1980 and is one of the oldest members of the club being a member for 41 years now. Despite his age and at a time when he should be spending with his Grandkids, he had chosen to come in as the Treasurer of our club. During this time as a Treasurer, he has made sure we the committee use your money wisely and prudently and have always had the finances of the club in good order as well as being managed correctly. Mr Rama Krishnan has been returned unopposed as Treasurer again for the new tenure of 2021 – 2023. We believe he will be of further service to the Club in future.

CHAN KWAI FONG PJK (deceased) One of the most senior members of The New Club, Taiping is Chan Kwai Fong. He joined the club in 1970, initially attracted by the noble game of golf, but soon he was immersed in the many other activities TNC had to offer. His talents were soon sported by the Club management and he was roped in to serve in various ad hoc sub-committees. He was elected to serve on the General Committee for one term and assisted the TNC 121 st Anniversary Celebration Organizing Committee as Organizing Secretary. Golf was the mainstay of club activities in those days. Most of the active members were golfers. Our old golf course was a hive of activity daily, Golf was very much enjoyed and our short 9-hole course sited around the beautiful Lake Gardens was crowded with intrepid golfers, each trying to outplay their playing partners for that little pot of gold (which would be a couple of golf balls) which went to the winner of the group. There was much fellowship and camaraderie amongst the golfers. After each round of golf, they would gather at the Bailey Verandah to foster fellowship, settle their bets and down a pint or two. Kwai Fong was amongst the dedicated band of Golf Sub Committee members He was the Golf Secretary for several years and was even the Vice Captain for one term. But swimming was Kwai Fong’s passion and his forte. It was around the swimming pool that Uncle Chan (to most of the younger members who frequent the poolside) excelled and where he dedicated most of his 45 years of yeomen service to the club. Without fail, the Swimming Section would organize its annual swimming gala - a much looked forward to event for the club swimmers. Kwai Fong had trained and groomed a band of fellow workers in the Swimming Sub Committee who also contributed much to the great fun time at the poolside Uncle Chan also introduced lifesaving activities to club members, Many club swimmers, young and old, men and women have benefitted from attendance at lifesaving classes conducted by Uncle Chan, including Club President Tang Yuet Mun and Swimming Chairman Dr. Guna, who both hold the coveted Bronze Medallion – a recognized and accepted lifesaving award.. TNC publishes a quarterly newsletter which is the envy of many other clubs. The newsletter is tastefully presented with sufficient colourful pictorial coverage to entice readers to want to turn to the next page. The reports of various activities are brief but well written. The editorials are pillars of excellence and often contain comments of topical interest. In fact the TNC Newsletter is a benchmark for other clubs to emulate. Preparing the publication of a newsletter even for a small club like ours is a long and tedious task and the uncooperative attitude or perhaps tardiness of those chairpersons who are tasked with submitting reports and photos does not make the editor’s job any easier. But life must go on and each issue comes out faithfully albeit often late. This is the heartaches Uncle Chan has to take in stride, and lose much sleep over if he has.to. This is the type of dedication TNC is blessed with amongst its members, and that is one of the reasons why TNC, even with its 130 years of history, remains relevant. Thank you, Uncle Chan, for being there for us. At an age when many of his contemporaries have fallen off their perches and are pushing up daisies in the field, many club members wonder what inspires Uncle Chan. With old age, grey hair and dimming eyesight, many old folks like Uncle Chan would rather plop themselves into a comfortable armchair, put up their legs and read a good book or enjoy watching a Korean movie on TV. As he reflects over the past 45 years of distinguished and dedicated service to TNC, he quips, with a twinkle in his eyes, “The best is yet to be” From the bottom our hearts, THANK YOU Uncle Chan for almost half a century of unparalleled and brilliant service to our club.

Y.BHG. DATO KAMARULBAHRAIN BIN ZAINUDDIN DPMP,PMP,PPT The saying that the cream always rises to the top is never truer then when associated with Dato Kamarulbaharain bin Zainuddin – the longest serving President of The New Club, Taiping. When we look at the roll of honour of TNC’s Club Presidents, the name of this pleasant, affable man,, Dato Kamal (as he is popularly known) comes up to the top – shining brilliantly. Dato Kamal joined the club in 1989. He served as the TNC President from 1999 – 2011. During his tenure as TNC President, the Club grew significantly. His crowning glory during this time was the club renovation project carried out in 2002. All the renovation work was carried out according to the specifications approved by the Department of Museums and Antiquity, and was approved by the Ministry of Culture, Arts & Heritage so that the New Club building remains an heritage building DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Perak Darul Ridwan, Sultan Azlan Shah visited the club in 2002 and officially opened the renovated club. It was a blue ribbon event. Another notable project during Dato Kamal’s tenure of as TNC President was the launching of the Golf Gallery Project during TNC’s 121 st Anniversary Celebrations in 2006. Once again, the launching ceremony was officiated by DYMM Sultan Azlan Shah., with much pomp and pageantry. As the President of the Club, he looked keenly into every aspect of the development of the club. As a successful businessman, Dato Kamal was aware that for the club to progress, it must be put on a firm financial footing. He introduced various measures at cost-cutting in club expenditure. He looked into increasing the membership of the club, for he realized that a large membership would result in more members visiting the club and participating in club activities, in the process of which, members would spend more money at the club, resulting in an increased financial turnover. Dato Kamal also looked into the physical needs of the members diligently. He supported existing sports facilities with enthusiasm, by providing funds for various sports activities and he also encouraged the introduction of new games and other leisure activities such as line dancing and karaoke singing. Dato Kamal also looked beyond the club and into the community. He encouraged club members to participate in community service projects. Annually, TNC supports a District Blood Donation drive at our club premises. Volunteers from our club assist and support the Food & Fun Fair organized by the Sekolah Semangat Maju, a special school for special children. During community celebratory events such as Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidil Fitri, Deepavali, Vasakhi and Christmas, organized by the club, children from orphanages and other homes for deprived children have been invited to attend. Although, Dato Kamal is currently not a member of the Management Committee, he continues to offer his advice to the present committee on its ongoing renovation activities, so that available funds are out to best use. Dato Kamal’s distinguished service to the Club is hereby honored and the members of TNC, old and new, thank him for a job, truly, well done.

Y. BHG. DATO SERI YEOP JUNIOR BIN HAJI ADLAN SPMP, DPMP, PJN, PMP, JP, PJK YBhg. Dato’ Yeop Jr. served TNC with distinction over a long period in various portfolios. Dato’ Yeop Jr, as he is popularly known around the club, became a club member in the 1970’s. As a Malaysian Civil servant, he was an officer in the Taiping Council, where he headed an important department, and where he was well respected as a department head, leading his staff skillfully and efficiently. It was inevitable that he used some of these management skills when Yeop Jr. took up various voluntary positions in the running of The New Club, all for the betterment of the members. Dato’ Yeop Jr loves the royal and ancient game of golf and it was in the golf environment that he excelled. He was appointed Golf Captain from 1986 -1991.and he took his responsibilities as golf captain efficiently and seriously. He was responsible for several tweaking of the golf course so as to make it more challenging. The two most notable contributions from Yeop were the construction of the 5 th hole and the 6 th hole. The 5 th Hole was known as the crocodile hole, named because some members swore that a crocodile was seen basking in the pond on the left side of the fairway. The 7 th Hole was not for the faint-hearted – it was a short Par 3, with a sliver of water jutting into the fairway, just to intimidate the golfers. The quiet and efficient management skills he displayed while serving TNC did not go unnoticed. DYTM the Raja Muda of Perak had observed the many successful tournaments that Yeop had spearheaded. Tuanku honored Yeop by appointing him as his Chief Organizer for DYTM’s birthday Golf Tournaments. In the early 1990’s, Yeop was appointed the Orang Besar Jajahan for Batang Padang and he had to leave his beloved Taiping, where he has a host of friends. What was Batang Padang’s gain was Taiping’s loss. Today, Dato Yeop Jr. is still our Honorary Member of TNC, and he continues to keep in touch with his many Taiping friends, especially his ex-golfing buddies. Thank you Dato Seri, for your past contributions which have helped TNC to be a premier Club in this part of the country.

NAME : MR. ONG HONG KONG PJK M'SHIP NO : 053 ( DECEASED) Ong Hong Kong became a member of the club in 1975. During the past 40 years he has not only been an active member, but has served the Club Management in various capacities, initially as a sub committee member . He was elected the Hon. Secretary from 1979 - 1983. As a secretary, he revitalized the way the club office was run, introducing various efficient administrative procedures which helped the staff to carry out their duties efficiently. He also looked into the other aspects of running the general staff. Although some of his general management procedures were revolutionary for the club, these measures were however effective in stamping out time wasting and excessive and unwarranted overtime payments. The club certainly owes him grateful thanks for his excellent contribution. Hong Kong took up the game of golf when he joined the Club and soon immersed himself in the running of the Golf Section as well. He was a committee member of the Golf Section when this section was under the captaincy of Mr. Ooi Leong Seng. He served as the Golf Secretary when YBhg. Dato Seri Yeop Junior was the Golf Captain, as well as under the captaincy of Mr. Tan Lian Huat, and eventually, in 2010 – 2011, he was elected as the Golf Captain. Ong Hong Kong, who is past his 34 years, continues to be active in golf and currently he is the Vice Captain for the Section. Hong Kong was also keen on the development of the Club so that better facilities are made available to members. He spearheaded a committee to look into the resurfacing of our tennis courts. Most club members are unaware that the existence of the swimming pool at the club was also the brainchild of Hong Kong, who made the proposal at the Annual General Meeting that the club make a decision to construct a 25m swimming pool at its present site. This proposal became an urgent issue as our unique swimming pool at the foot of the Taiping waterfall was taken back by the state government. TNC members would like to record their thanks and appreciation for his long and faithful service.

TN. HJ. MOHAIDEEN BIN HJ. MD ISHACK PPT, PJK has been a member of TNC since 1986. Because of his business background and since TNC needed a reliable Hon. Treasurer, Mohaideen, as he is better known around the Club, was elected to this post in 1998. In 1999, Mohaideen was elected the Hon. Secretary. As a result, Mohaideen became the Hon. Secretary as well as the Hon. Treasurer. This was history of sorts as this was an unusual situation when one person holds two key positions in a Board of Committee. He was again elected as the Hon. Secretary in 2007 In his personal capacity, Mohaideen is a man of many talents; one of these talents is the gift of networking. He has a vast network of friends, among whom are many Old Edwardians who hold high ranking positions in the government. Mohaideen will use this networking to great advantage when there is a genuine need, as the following issue will testify: During the time that Mohaideen was the Hon. Sec. cum Hon. Treasurer, the Club was in a dilemma. We were slapped with a quit rent of RM21,000.00. Mohaideen made an appointment with the then Perak State Secretary, Dato Abdul Majid, an old boy of SM King Edward Vll School, Taiping, in Ipoh and he managed to argue for the quit rent to be reduced to RM4,000. That decision was a big relief to the Club Management. Mohaideen’s great contribution did not end here. Through his connection with the District Office, TNC managed to obtained permission for the Club to use the piece of land by the side of the tennis courts for development to promote tennis in the Club. Quietly, but successfully, without the sounding of trumpets and ringing of bells, Mohaideen worked quietly in several minor development projects of the club house. Through his initiative, the dining room and the bar were renovated, the main hall was air-conditioned and the reception area was improved. To Haji Mohaideen bin Hj. Md. Ishack, we congratulate you for your service to the Club and we look forward to your continued support.

LEE CHAN MENG PPT Lee Chan Meng joined TNC in the year 1986. Having come from an active background of a very hectic curricular service in his career as a school teacher, it was soon inevitable that Chan Meng got immersed in the management of the many activities of TNC. He was involved in various club activities as a member of various sub committees and helped to organize various sports and social events of the club. His leadership skills were soon recognized and he entered service in the General Committee for five years (1996 to 2001). On personal reasons, he did not seek re-election for the following term. He came back into the General Committee from 2003 until today. Chan Meng has sat in the GC for 17 long years, long enough to make him one of the longest serving GC member in the annals of TNC. This long tenure of service has been outstanding as the following would indicate:  1996 – 2001, Chairman of Indoor Games. He organized annual competitions and popularized games like badminton, table tennis, billiards, snooker and darts.  As Chairman of the Entertainment & Socials Sub Committee, he and his subcommittee members had organized many cultural celebratory events, such as the eve Merdeka and New Year Dance Countdown celebrations, the Annual Children’s X’mas Party which is eagerly looked forward to by member’s children. The various cultural celebrations such the Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Deepavali and Vaisakhi celebrations were always a blast with the club premises suitably and distinctively decorated.  Chan Meng also headed the Karaoke Section in the past. Although he may not sing as well as Bing Crosby or the legendary Michael Jackson, he looked after the needs of this section well, and come weekends, the Karaoke Room would be well patronized. This section of the club has regularly been patronized by some members of the royal family too.  Chan Meng also spearheaded the TNC Blood Donation Campaign. It has become one of the community service project endorsed by Club Management and augurs well for the club as a caring organization.  As Chairman of Bulletin & Library Section, he proposed to upgrade our Library to be air-conditioned to provide comfortable ambience for members and their children in pursuit of knowledge.  Chan Meng is also keen and accomplished tennis player and had been involved in this section as Tennis Captain for two terms.  Another contribution from the keen mind of Chan Meng was through his proposal for the introduction of Compulsory Spending in the Club. This resolution was passed at the AGM in 1999 and our F&B Section has been put on a sound financial footing. But the crowning glory for Lee Chan Meng in his distinguished service to TNC was his passionate enthusiasm in persuading the General Committee to launch PROJECT 999 – a membership drive to increase the club membership to 999, after which the membership would be closed. To ensure the success of the project, an easy payment scheme for entrance fees was introduced. The object of limiting the total membership to below 1000 is to ensure that there is no overcrowding around the club as the current facilities will not be able to support a large membership. This limited membership will ensure that the needs of the current members are adequately met. THE NEW CLUB, Taiping salutes Mr. Lee Chan Meng and thanked him for his excellent services rendered all these years.

V.J. DORAI, AMN (deceased) Victor Dorai was one of the early Asian members of The New Club. He was the type of member who would be welcomed by any club, for he was a good club member. Victor was friendly and affable, thus making friends easily. His good natured ways endeared him to many and almost every member liked him. Victor was a good and loyal colleague to the many sub-committee members he worked with. He served generously in the club in many sub committees. We will always remember his infectious smile and his easy going ways and his strong character. He served tirelessly and relentlessly for the club, especially when he was the Golf Captain, for golf was his passion. He would be around the golf course early in the morning to ensure that the golf staff were at their jobs. He boded no nonsense as far as golf course maintenance was concerned. Victor was not a mean golfer himself (with a "buaya" handicap fluctuating around 15), and so he knew a lot about golf and how to exact golfing skills from the local golfers. Victor had the distinct honor of being the Swimming Sub Committee Chairman when our present 25m swimming pool was commissioned in 1997, Many of us wondered if Victor could swim but we never found out as he was never seen wearing a swimming trunk. Nevertheless, whether he could swim or not, did not really mattered. He poured his heart and soul into carrying out his job as the first Chairman for Swimming Section. With the support of a good sub- committee, comprising knowledgeable members, the nitty-gritty of pool management was slowly, but successfully introduced and implemented and Victor survived his baptism as the first swimming pool "manager". Victor had some interesting set ways around the club. His regular daily visits to the club house was legendary and clockwork in timing. At the stroke of 6.00 pm, Victor would arrive at the clubhouse in his unmistakable green MAZDA 626, and he would adjourn to the bar to have his daily dose of "setengahs" of Vodka. His timing was so precise that a member even quipped that even RTM could synchronize their clocks according to Victor's timing. Victor was also known for his generosity of service to the community. He would willingly and generously lend a helping hand whenever, and wherever help was needed. The measure of a Man is Not how did he die but how did he live. Not what did he gain but what did he give. These are the units to measure the worth of a man, as a MAN Victor was very much this MAN
